SHIBUMIWORKS
know Zen, wear ZEN

Zen is not a subject you study from the outside. It is something you live — in the way you sit, in the way you breathe, in the silence between your thoughts.
But for most people in the West, that door has never been opened. The teachings remain locked behind language barriers, cultural distance, and the kind of exoticization that turns a living philosophy into a decorative trend.
SHIBUMIWORKS exists to change that.
Know ZEN.
We write about the real teachings — not the watered-down, hashtag version, but the ideas that have shaped how Japanese people have understood impermanence (mujō), the beauty of transience (mono no aware), the freedom of no-mind (mushin), and the quiet dignity of restraint (wabi-sabi). These are not abstract theories. They are ways of seeing the world that, once understood, change how you move through your day. Through our articles, we introduce these teachings honestly and accessibly — not as exotic wisdom to be consumed, but as perspectives worth sitting with.
Wear ZEN.
And then there is the question every philosophy must eventually face: how does it enter your life? In Japan, the answer has never been purely intellectual. Zen lives in the tea you pour, the garden you tend, the calligraphy you brush. It lives in the kamon — family crests passed down through generations, each one a distillation of identity into pure form. It lives in the patterns woven into fabric for centuries: seigaiha (the endless waves), asanoha (the hemp leaf), shippo (the seven treasures). These designs were never mere decoration. They carried meaning. They carried intention.
know ZEN, wear ZEN.
Our products bring that tradition forward. Each piece features kanji drawn from Zen and Buddhist teachings — words like
ichi-go ichi-e (一期一会, “one encounter, one chance”),
ui-tenpen (有為転変, “all things change”),
issai-kaiku (一切皆苦, “all existence is suffering”) — alongside traditional Japanese crests and patterns. When you wear them, you are not wearing a slogan. You are wearing a philosophy that has been lived, tested, and refined over centuries.
Why These Words Were Born
The subtitle “know ZEN, wear ZEN” emerged from a simple conviction: understanding and embodiment are not separate acts. In Zen, there is no gap between knowing and doing. The moment you truly understand impermanence, you are already living it. The moment you recognize the weight of a single encounter, every encounter changes.
This is the bridge SHIBUMIWORKS builds. We don’t ask you to sit in a monastery. We don’t ask you to abandon your life and seek enlightenment. We ask something smaller and, in its own way, harder: to pay attention. Read about what mushotoku — acting without the desire for reward — actually means in practice. Then carry that word on your chest, and see if it changes the way you walk into a room.
The founder of SHIBUMIWORKS is an Osaka-based designer and Zen practitioner whose study of aesthetics, Zen Buddhism, and Shinto began in the temples and universities of Kyoto. This is not a brand built on trend research. It is built on practice — years of sitting, studying, and asking how the deepest ideas in Japanese culture can be shared with people who have never encountered them, without flattening them into something they are not.

Then let it become part of how the world sees you — and how you see yourself.
